I was afraid I’d lost my reading mojo over the course of the summer, but July proved me wrong, offering up multiple riveting reads across multiple genres and subgenres. I might actually be on track to beat last year’s book total if I keep going at this rate! And that victory will be due to books like The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics and Three Part Harmony, and authors like Sangu Mandanna and Rebecca Roanhorse, who keep knocking it out of the park with titles in their respective SFF series.
I feel like 2019 has been a real bounty in terms of finding diverse and inclusive romances across all my favorite categories—whether it’s Olivia Waite’s lush, nerdy, historical romance about a lady astronomer and her patroness, or Sona Charaipotra’s Doogie Howser-inspired YA about a genius teenage doctor who isn’t necessarily smart about everything in her life, or Holley Trent’s slow-burn polyamorous love story with three very different people finding out how they fit. And then you have these gobsmacking projects like Sangu Mandanna’s space opera rendition of The Mahabharata. I ended book two with a big ol’ sense of “Holy shit! Where’s book three?!” If anyone reading this post picks it up, I hope you have the same reaction!
