We’ve been getting a lot of e-mail answers to our 20 Most Fascinating Couples poll, which is really cool! I love it when people are motivated to tell us what they like and don’t like. (Hi, GH’s Liason fans: you can stop now. LOL!) But one thing I’ve noticed is some criticism that we didn’t include Bo and Hope from DAYS OF OUR LIVES or GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Luke and Laura on the list, as well as couples like AW’s Mac and Rachel. To this concern, I would like to remind readers that our parameters were couples created between 1989 and 2009: the years Weekly has been “alive.”
If we were doing our most fascinating soap couples ever, of course the likes of Bo/Hope and Luke/Laura would make it! Are ya kiddin’ me? Leaving them out of that kind of comprehensive list would be a massive oversight.
There were some couples that fit our criteria who were thisclose to making the list. I gotta tell you, narrowing down to 20 and trying to cover as many soaps as possible ishard. Amongst the “almosts” were ATWT’s Simon and Katie, OLTL’s Bo and Nora, GH’s Robin and Patrick, and AMC’s Zach and Kendall. Believe me, we could’ve spent twenty pages on our favorite couples throughout our 20-year history. We had to rein ourselves in!
And now a totally unrelated note about yesterday’s GL: Buzz and Daisy’s use of the word “glockenspiel!” Joe, Michael and I have been looking for a chance to work it into the magazine because it’s just such a great word (and everyone needs a purpose in life). In fact, I fondly recall one morning where we were brainstorming how to get an actor to say it (sort of like Mary McDonnell’s “passport” scene with Stephen Tobolowsky in Sneakers) and I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. So, suffice it to say, Buzz and Daisy made our day!
