Soap Opera Weekly: Blogging With Mala

There’s a right way and a wrong way to do insane things on a soap. Having Y&R’s Mary Jane kill and stuff her cat — and then cuddle it? WRONG. Oh my God, that was beyond the pale. GUIDING LIGHT doing pretty much whatever they want..? AWESOME! I mean, seriously, GL is going off the air in a few months, so if they want Buzz to smoke cigarettes and Olivia to buy personal toys, more power to ’em! What’s Y&R’s excuse for the excessive sleeping around, Adam in Sabrina drag, bloody towels, and taxidermy? Do they want to lose the top spot in the Nielsens?

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t look away. It’s like slowing down at a car wreck. The show is completely crack-ridden. And I actually honestly enjoy the Jack/Phyllis/Sharon/Nick quadrangle. I mean, sure, Sharon having three baby daddies is excessive, but I would watch the actors involved read the back of a milk carton out loud. Plus, I am on the edge of my seat when it comes to finding out what’s up with Cane and Phillip III. I love that Cane’s good guy façade is crumbling — he always was a bit too sweet to be real. But the increasingly wack-a-doo Adam/Ashley story and this Mary Jane stuff is too much right now!

There’s a huge difference between going off the air with a bang and going down in flames. GL is earning raves right now because it’s returning to the great writing and family-driven stories that made it such a household name. Y&R is doing…okay, I have no idea what they’re doing. Maybe the show should stop gaslighting its fans?
