Mala’s January 2020 Cool Reads

I started 2020 as I mean to go on—-by reading a lot! The find of the month was definitely Ann Aguirre’s Strange Love, an inventive, sweet, sexy—and side-splittingly funny at times—tale that’s equal parts Predator, The Bachelor, and The Hunger Games. This is an alien romance where the alien isn’t just some oversized humanoid with a giant blue or gold wang, and Aguirre makes it work so well! Bonus? There’s a talking dog. I don’t want to say too much more, but Snaps definitely steals the show. My other favorite of the month was Claire Kent’s Last Light, a slow-burn love story with an older hero and younger heroine set after an apocalyptic event. It was all about finding hope and connection in the grimmest of circumstances—a timely message I definitely appreciated. I also have to give a shout-out to Jackie Lau’s Man vs. Durian, which has convinced me to try durian ice cream when I’m in Toronto this week. I might chicken out, but the intent exists!
